Disclosure
A 62-year-old woman was rescued in Bragança Paulista (SP) after spending 49 years working in a situation similar to slavery in a residence in the city center. The operation was carried out last Wednesday (10) by the Public Ministry of Labor (MPT) and the Labor Inspection of the Ministry of Labor and Employment (MTE).
According to the MPT, the woman was handed over by her father to a family in 1977, when she was 12 years old, under the promise that she would be raised and have access to education. However, she was removed from school, did not become literate and has remained working in the same house since then, according to the complaint.
According to inspections, the worker never had a vacation or weekly day off in almost half a century of work. She even worked on Sundays, holidays, Christmas and New Year.

Until 2015, when she was able to retire due to a period in which she was registered, the woman received small amounts, which were controlled by the employer and only released occasionally. Since retiring, around ten years ago, she has stopped receiving a salary, but has continued to work at the residence.

In recent months, according to the MPT, the woman was solely responsible for the care of her boss, a bedridden elderly woman. She slept in the same room as her employer and spent sleepless nights, even though she was sick and had no access to medical treatment.
The worker told agents that the heavy routine was damaging her physical and mental health. According to the Public Ministry of Labor, she had not left her apartment for around four months and went a month without washing her hair.
After the rescue, the woman was welcomed by family members. The MPT informed that it will adopt measures to guarantee the payment of the amounts owed and that the case will be reported to the authorities responsible for the criminal investigation.
The amounts charged by the MPT total R$1.67 million, including severance pay and compensation for individual and collective moral damages. The family's legal representative asked for 20 days to respond.
The investigation began based on complaints made to Dial 100 and the Public Ministry of Labor's reporting channel.
