World Cup WAGs: Who are the players' companions and how can they steal the attention
For those who follow sports, the term “WAGs” may sound familiar. The acronym, in English, means wives and girlfriends (“wives and girlfriends”, in Portuguese) and is used to refer to the companions of professional athletes.
The term emerged in the United Kingdom and began to circulate in 2002, after appearing in a report in the “Sunday Telegraph” about a nickname given to the wives of English team players by a hotel in Dubai. But it was at the 2006 World Cup in Germany that the expression became popular once and for all.
Victoria Beckham, wife of David Beckham, is considered one of the first WAGs. Although the term emerged surrounded by a pejorative tone, similar to that of “maria-chuteira” in Brazil, many of them began to separate themselves from this stereotype by building their own careers and presence on social networks, beyond the universe of players.
