According to police chief Cleiton Lobo, who investigated the case at the time, Samylla exchanged messages with the accused shortly before being filmed being picked up by car on the same night as the crime. "We don't know if she even did a program. We know that she went out to do a program with this person, with this boy. Now, he claimed, informally, that he left her on another street in the city and had no contact with her", stated Cleiton at the time. Witnesses who were close to the region where the body was located told the police that they heard noises similar to gunshots and a vehicle leaving the area at high speed. With the vehicle's license plate filmed by the security camera, the car was located and the man was arrested by the Military Police.
