MPPI gives deadline for Hospital Areolino de Abreu to hire more than 80 professionals after inspection shows deficit

The Public Ministry of the State of Piauí (MP-PI) recommended the adoption of measures to rebuild the workforce at the Areolino de Abreu Hospital, in the North Zone of Teresina, after inspections by the Regional Medicine Council (CRM-PI) and the Regional Nursing Council (Coren-PI) revealed an insufficient number of doctors and nurses.
The document, signed by Public Prosecutor Débora Geane, head of the 12th Public Prosecutor's Office, on Tuesday (9), recommended that the Health Secretary adopt the necessary administrative measures for the hiring and immediate placement of 87 professionals at the hospital. The deadline is 90 days.

"The State Department of Health (Sesapi) itself, through an order, formally recognized the insufficiency of the hospital's staff and validated a technical sizing study that pointed out the immediate need to hire professionals from different categories", pointed out an excerpt from the recommendation.
The MP also recommends the hiring, within 30 days, of at least one clinical doctor on duty and one additional psychiatrist. The document also establishes the implementation, within 60 days, of specific and permanently trained teams to perform physical containment procedures.
The state Secretary of Health must present to the MP, within 15 days, a detailed schedule for complying with the recommendation.
Any non-compliance with the measures may constitute awareness of the irregularities and enable future liability through public civil action.

Pedro Araújo da Silva, 29 years old, was found dead in the bathroom of the Areolino de Abreu Hospital, in the North Zone of Teresina, in the early hours of February 26, 2026.
TV Clube found that his hands and feet were tied, he was suffocated with a plastic bag and then his body was burned in the inmates' ward.
Two patients hospitalized in the same pavilion confessed to the murder and were isolated. Pedro's body was taken to the Institute of Legal Medicine (IML).

The general director of Areolino de Abreu, Cida Santiago, stated that the patient had been hospitalized for just over a month and would be discharged this Thursday.
