Félix Carneiro/Government of Tocantins
Anyone who intends to obtain their first National Driving License (CNH) in Tocantins now needs to take a toxicological test. The requirement came into effect for qualification processes for categories A, B and AB, which began obtaining licenses from May 16, 2026.
Anyone who started before this date does not need to take the exam. The determination requires the candidate to present a negative result to complete the process. The purpose of the test is to detect the use of psychoactive substances and check whether the future driver is fit to drive.
The change was informed by the State Department of Traffic (Detran) and follows law 15.153/2025, which amended the Brazilian Traffic Code (CTB). According to the agency, the candidate who has a positive result must retake the test after 90 days, counting from the collection. In this case, the qualification process is not terminated and remains active until the negative result is registered in the system.

Exam steps
The toxicology test must be carried out directly at clinics accredited by the National Traffic Secretariat (Senatran), without the need to attend a Detran unit.
The analysis can be carried out using samples such as blood, hair, skin or nails, capable of indicating the use of prohibited substances. After collection, the clinic itself records the result in the national system of qualified drivers, which can be accessed by Detran.
For categories A and B, the exam can be taken at any stage of the process, as long as it is completed before the provisional driving license is issued. The document is only released after the negative result is presented.
Unlike what happens with categories C, D and E, the toxicological test does not need to be renewed after the provisional license is granted for motorcycle and car drivers.
Detran also warns that only exams carried out for the specific purpose of obtaining a driver's license will be accepted. Tests requested by companies, such as in admission or dismissal processes, are not valid for this purpose.
