Fraud police station in MT Reproduction A man suspected of carrying out scams using false stories of serious illnesses and alleged hospitalizations of family members to obtain money from women he had a relationship with was arrested red-handed by the Civil Police, this Monday (8), in Cuiabá. The investigation began after recording two incidents in which the suspect claimed to have cancer to ask for financial help. According to the Civil Police, he met one of the victims through social media and, after gaining her trust, began a romantic relationship. During their coexistence, the person being investigated reported that he was facing advanced-stage cancer and that his daughter would be hospitalized for treatment of another serious illness. The amounts received were quickly transferred to third parties, and part of the resources would have been allocated to online betting platforms. The victim told investigators that she was subjected to intense emotional manipulation, believing in the man's health problems and financial difficulties. In one of the situations, she even carried out an emergency transfer after being informed that the suspect was being threatened by supposed debt collectors. Based on the information gathered, police officers from the Estelionato Police Station located and detained the person being investigated. During interrogation, he admitted that he bought and sold bank accounts. Investigations also indicate that the suspect may have carried out the same scam in other states, such as São Paulo, Bahia and Espírito Santo. According to the police, he used stories involving serious illnesses, fundraising campaigns and requests for financial help to deceive victims and obtain resources illicitly. Given the evidence, the man was charged with the crime of embezzlement. The chief delegate at the Estelionato Police Station, Eliane Moraes, informed that investigations continue to identify other possible victims and assess the damage caused by the scheme.
