According to Inmet, an El Niño event occurs when the Relative Oceanic Niño Index (Roni) remains equal to or greater than 0.5°C for at least five quarters.
“Based on data observed in May and projections, it is possible to infer that the first quarter to reach this threshold will be April-May-June”, informs the Inmet bulletin.
Monitoring
The institute monitors conditions in the Equatorial Pacific Ocean, regarding Sea Surface Temperature (SST), as well as other atmospheric and oceanic indicators associated with the El Niño phenomenon.
At the same time, it evaluates forecasts and bulletins issued by the main international meteorological centers specializing in climate monitoring.
The forecast is that Inmet will release, at the end of this week, a new technical note on the possible evolution of the phenomenon.
