The teenager's body was located shortly after 6pm and then taken to the Legal Medical Institute (IML). Diving operations were hampered by local conditions. According to firefighters, in addition to the low visibility caused by the murky water, the area is used as a river route for boats, which increased the risks for rescue teams. According to witness reports, Vitor was with friends and the group decided to try to swim across the Parnaíba River. Along the way, the young people would have stopped to wait for a ferry to pass. When they resumed the crossing, the friends realized that the teenager was unable to complete the journey and disappeared into the waters of the river.
