The Ministry of Health reported that it took the decision to temporarily suspend the Butantan vaccine after 42 people showed serious symptoms - which represents 0.008% of the total number of people immunized. Two people died: a 58-year-old man, from Santo André, in São Paulo; and a 48-year-old woman, from Paranapanema, also in São Paulo. The Minister of Health, Alexandre Padilha, stated that it is not possible to establish a direct relationship between serious cases and the vaccine and that all will be analyzed.
"It is precautionary action, which should always guide those who respect life, those who respect science, even more so when we are talking about vaccination. Secondly, for the Ministry of Health, Anvisa and Instituto Butantan to deepen the investigation, both in the 42 cases, which are cases, episodes of severe adverse reactions to the vaccine. Look for a risk factor in these 42 people, identify with people who took it at the same time if there is any other difference between these people or other people, carry out a kind of study case-control in relation to this”, says Alexandre Padilha, Minister of Health.

Health Departments will monitor people who took the Butantan dengue vaccine in the last 21 days. Authorities recommend paying attention to the following symptoms: fever, abdominal pain, vomiting and bleeding.
The Ministry of Health highlighted that the decision is temporary and was adopted preventively to investigate cases. According to the federal government, the effectiveness of the vaccine is guaranteed. The Butantan vaccine was approved in all clinical criteria by Anvisa. Anyone who has already been vaccinated remains protected against the disease.
The suspension does not have a pre-determined period. During this period, the Ministry of Health and Butantan itself may propose additional studies or changes to the vaccine leaflet, for example, with the inclusion of other risk groups.
In a statement, the Butantan Institute said that the measure aims to guarantee the safety of the population in the next stages of vaccination; that maintains its commitment and absolute rigor to science and the health of the population and will continue working to support the Ministry of Health and Anvisa, providing all available information about the vaccine, carrying out new studies and monitoring the pharmacovigilance work of those vaccinated; and that in the three municipalities where there was mass vaccination of the population, pharmacovigilance monitoring was positive, with no important cases of adverse reactions in the population.
The decision does not affect the Japanese Qdenga vaccine. It continues to be used by the SUS in children and adolescents aged 10 to 14, and is sold in the private network.
The vice-president of the Brazilian Society of Immunizations, Renato Kfouri, stated that the temporary interruption shows the rigor in monitoring vaccines by the SUS:
“This is even more proof that the Brazilian vaccination system is safe. And, if we detect any adverse event related to any vaccine, this will be promptly communicated with transparency to the population, always keeping the safety and benefit of the population in the first place”.
