Espírito Santo recorded, at the weekend, the lowest temperatures of 2026 so far. Amid the record cold, residents and tourists found frozen scenes in the Caparaó National Park, in the south of the state, on the border with Minas Gerais.
A waterfall was partially frozen, the vegetation was covered by ice and even sheets of ice on the water were recorded by Dentistry student Bruno Protázio, 21, during a trail in Pedra Menina, district of Dores do Rio Preto, on Sunday (7). Even plants and clothes were frozen.

Bruno was accompanied by his father and a friend when he made the records. The images were captured on a section of the trail on the Espírito Santo side of the park, above the region known as Casa Queimada.
According to the student, the group left home around 7am and found the scene frozen around two hours later.
"Our house is very close to the entrance to the park. We left early and went up there. The photos were taken around 9 am. There was a lot of ice. It was the coldest temperature I've ever had there. It's the second time I've seen it be -2°C", he said.

In addition to the ice accumulated in the vegetation, the images show a waterfall with frozen parts, a rare scene for many visitors who frequent the region.
According to Bruno, the intense cold was also felt by residents of the lower areas of Dores do Rio Preto, where thermometers approached 0°C in the early hours of the day.
A regular visitor to Caparaó National Park, the student said he maintains an emotional connection with the region because of his family's history.
"The peak has a very strong memory of my grandfather, Francisco Protázio. It was he who opened the road that gives access to the park's entrance on the Espírito Santo side and dedicated himself to the growth of the region. I try to value this legacy and promote the place to attract more tourists", he stated.
With the arrival of winter, Bruno believes that the period is ideal for those who want to experience the low temperatures and the characteristic landscapes of the Espírito Santo mountains.
"You can come and enjoy this experience here in our region. It is something rewarding and unforgettable", he invited.
According to the Capixaba Institute of Research, Technical Assistance and Rural Extension (Incaper), outside the park, the lowest temperature recorded in the state was 7.8°C, in Venda Nova do Imigrante, also on Sunday (7).
The municipalities of Vargem Alta, with 8.4°C, and Guaçuí, with 8.6°C, also stood out. The cities are among those that tend to record the lowest rates due to the high altitude and favorable conditions for cooling during the early hours of the morning.

Saturday morning (6) had already been intensely cold in Caparaó National Park. Also close to Casa Queimada, the local tour guide, Ivan Souza, recorded that the ice covered the tents, the lawn and even froze the pants of one of the tourists.
"It's already defrosting here, but it's beautiful. [...] It's really cool. It's beautiful, huh?", said Ivan.
He was unable to verify the exact temperature, but believes that the thermometers registered close to -5°C during the night. g1 contacted the Capixaba Institute for Research, Technical Assistance and Rural Extension (Incaper) to obtain data on the minimum temperatures recorded in Espírito Santo during the weekend and to find out if there was a record cold in the state, but did not receive a response until the publication of this article.

Frost was within the forecast
The ice scenario recorded in Caparaó National Park during the weekend was expected by meteorologists. According to the Capixaba Institute for Research, Technical Assistance and Rural Extension (Incaper), the conditions observed in the region are compatible with episodes of intense cold common in the highest areas of the park during winter.
According to the institute, the combination of a mass of cold air, clear skies during the early hours of the morning, low cloud cover and light winds favored surface cooling and the formation of frost in the higher altitude regions of southern Espírito Santo.
In these places, phenomena such as the freezing of accumulated water, the formation of ice on vegetation and even partial freezing on the banks of waterfalls and small watercourses can occur.
Incaper highlighted that the formation of frost does not always depend on negative temperatures recorded by meteorological stations. On exposed surfaces, such as lawns, leaves and stones, the temperature can drop below 0°C, favoring the emergence of ice crystals.
According to the institute, the occurrence of frost in Caparaó and in higher areas of the Mountain Region was already predicted between the 5th and 8th of June. The lowest temperature values were recorded precisely in the highest altitude regions, where the relief contributes to more intense cooling compared to neighboring areas.
