Woman dies and 11 other people are injured after bus overturns on BR-290, in RS The only passenger who emerged unharmed from the bus that overturned on BR-290, in Glorinha, in the Metropolitan Region of Porto Alegre, on Saturday night (6), helped in rescuing the other occupants of the vehicle. The trip left Curitiba (PR) heading to the capital of Rio Grande do Sul. Among the actions, military officer Oziel Batista da Silva Pereira helped evacuate people and provided first aid. "I managed to make some bandages, I managed to help. There was a girl who was underground. Two passengers were seriously injured. The vehicle overturned at kilometer 42 of the highway, towards Litoral-Capital, at around 10:20 pm. Pereira says he was surprised by the noise. According to him, there were two bangs before the bus lost control and left the road. "There were two very loud noises. It was a first noise that really sounded like an explosion. Then the bus started to pull to the side and the second noise came, which was when it hit the guard rail", he said. The vehicle left the road, hit the metal defense and fell into an embankment on the side of the highway. The bus traveled approximately 100 meters against the structure before tipping over and falling into an embankment. After the impact, the soldier says he tried to act quickly to avoid greater risks and provide assistance. "When I saw that I was a little safer, I got up and grabbed what equipment I had to try to rescue him", he comments. A volunteer with a rescue group, he said he used the training to stay calm and help other passengers. Pereira estimates that he managed to directly help around four or five people. Even given the severity of the accident, he says he felt like he had done everything he could: "It's a feeling of duty accomplished and you feel good about yourself, despite having died. But you feel that the people you could help, you helped", he points out. This Sunday (7), the soldier is still impacted by what he experienced. "A little accelerated, I didn't sleep very well. The guy is accelerated, his body gets adrenaline pumping, the guy is tossing and turning in bed, thinking what else he could do, what he shouldn't have done", he says.
