Man tries to protect women from harassment, is punched and shot dead in Greater BH The body of Ailton da Silva, aged 57, who died after defending two women who, according to the Military Police, were victims of sexual harassment, was buried this Sunday, at the Parque Nova Lima Cemetery, in the Metropolitan Region of Belo Horizonte. The crime took place in the early hours of Saturday (6). According to the police report, the women were leaving a June party when they began to be followed by a man, who insisted on accompanying them home. They refused to approach him, but the suspect continued to insist and approached them again on Avenida Rio Solimões, in the Nossa Senhora de Fátima neighborhood. At this point, Ailton intervened and asked the man to leave the women alone. There was an argument, and, according to the PM, the suspect punched the victim in the face. Ailton fell, hit his head on the floor, lost consciousness and started convulsing. Witnesses called emergency services and tried to revive him. He was taken to Nossa Senhora de Lourdes Hospital, in Nova Lima, but he did not survive his injuries. Security cameras recorded the aggression. The images show the moment the suspect pushes the victim and punches him. The videos also captured the despair of the women who were at the scene (see video above). According to the Military Police, the suspect is Antônio Edson de Oliveira Alves, 47 years old. He was accompanied by his son, a child of around 10 years old, during all the confusion. After the attack, the man left the place with the child, but was located by the police in the house where he lives. Initially, family members reported that he had left, but a resident told police that the suspect was hiding upstairs. The bedroom door was broken down, and he surrendered without resistance. He was arrested. According to the State Department of Justice and Public Security (Sejusp), Antônio Edson de Oliveira Alves had his arrest converted into preventative arrest. Family members describe him as someone calm, who avoided conflicts and had a habit of helping other people. He leaves three children and six grandchildren. "It was cowardice. My brother never fought with anyone in the neighborhood. He would run away from trouble and, suddenly, trying to defend the girls, this guy does this", said his sister, Ivanete Silvana da Silva. The daughter, Joice Vianna, also mourned her father's death. My father didn't do anything to anyone. He was an excellent person, anyone could count on him,” he said. The case remains under investigation by the Civil Police, which is investigating the circumstances of the attack based on statements, security camera images and expert reports.
